The Cellular Jail and Its Role in India’s Freedom Struggle

The Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani, is one of the most infamous symbols of colonial oppression in India. Built by the British in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, it served as a high-security prison for Indian political prisoners during the Indian independence movement. Its construction began in 1896 and was completed in 1906. The jail was designed in the form of a starfish, with seven wings radiating from a central tower, intended to isolate inmates and prevent communication between them.

The prison's structure was a testament to the British intent to break the spirit of the revolutionaries. Each cell was 4.5 meters by 2.7 meters with a small ventilation window located at a height of three meters. The prison had no dormitories and was strictly for solitary confinement, which was psychologically torturous for the inmates.

Among the notable freedom fighters imprisoned here were Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, and Yogendra Shukla. The jail also housed many members of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) and the Ghadar Party, who were involved in various revolutionary activities against British rule.

The conditions within the jail were brutal. Prisoners were subjected to inhumane treatment, forced labor, and harsh punishments. They had to grind coconut and mustard oil, turn the kolhu (oil press) all day long, and were given meager, inadequate food. The British authorities imposed severe physical and psychological torture to crush the spirit of the inmates. Many prisoners went on hunger strikes to protest against these conditions, the most notable being the strike led by Mahavir Singh, Mohit Moitra, and Mohan Kishore Namadas. The British force-fed them, resulting in the deaths of many, including Mahavir Singh.

The struggle and sacrifices of the prisoners at Cellular Jail played a crucial role in galvanizing the freedom movement across India. The stories of their bravery and the atrocities they endured spread to the mainland, strengthening the resolve of millions to fight for independence.
